What Men and Women Actually Hate on First Dates (The Threads and the Data Agree)

Dr. Delulu|July 22, 2026

You are eleven minutes into a first date and they just checked their phone under the table for the third time. Not an emergency. Not a text they had to answer. Just a reflex, a little dopamine top up in the middle of a sentence you were still finishing. You already know how this ends. You are just going to be polite about it for another forty minutes.

Here is what nobody tells you about first dates. The thing that sinks them is almost never a lack of chemistry. It is a small, specific behavior the other person clocked in the first fifteen minutes and quietly filed under no. Both men and women keep these lists. The lists are longer than you think, they overlap less than you think, and almost every item on them is completely within your control.

The One Turnoff That Beats Everything Else

Ask a room full of daters what the biggest dealbreaker is and you will hear about looks, height, money. Ask the surveys and you get a very different answer. The number one turnoff, across genders, is how someone treats the server. Not because people are precious about manners, but because it is the one moment on the date where they show you how they behave toward a person who has no power over them and nothing you want. That is the real preview. Everything else is a performance aimed at you.

THE HARD NUMBERS

  • Match and the Kinsey Institute (Singles in America 2025, 5,001 US singles): rudeness to service staff is the number one dating turnoff at 54 percent.
  • YouGov (2025, 2,221 US adults): 88 percent say being dismissive to service staff on a date is unacceptable, the single most rejected behavior they tested, ahead of phone use, arriving late, and criticizing your order.
  • Tinder Year in Swipe 2024: the year's top dealbreakers were bad hygiene at 50 percent, rudeness at 44 percent, and talking too much about an ex at 34 percent.
  • Match 2025: having no opinion on things that matter is now a dealbreaker for 31 percent, nearly double the 16 percent who said so in 2017.

What Women Actually Hate (Straight From the Threads)

Pull up any r/AskWomen ick thread and the same complaints surface over and over. Strip out the one off weird ones and a clear pattern emerges: the turnoffs are almost all about control, contempt, and emotional regulation, dressed up as small moments.

🚩Demanding to see your phone, or hovering over who you text, on date one. It reads as a control audit, not curiosity.
🚩Trashing an ex with zero self reflection. Every ex was crazy translates directly to you are the next crazy ex.
🚩Negging. Backhanded compliments to knock you off balance are a 2005 tactic and everyone can smell it now.
🚩Trauma dumping your entire psychiatric file over one drink. Vulnerability is a green flag. A cold open about your childhood is not.
🚩Being rude to the server, then charming to you. The mask always slips toward the person with less power first.
🚩Mommy comparisons and calling for backup mid date. That is not how my mom does it is not the flex you think it is.

What Men Actually Hate (Same Threads, Different List)

The r/AskMen version of the thread reads differently. Less about control, more about effort and presence. The recurring theme is the sense of doing a date alone while someone sits across from you.

🚩Doing all the conversational work. One word answers and no questions back feel like an interview you are failing.
🚩The phone on the table, face up, lighting up all night. Yes, they notice, and yes it stings in both directions.
🚩No opinions on anything. I do not mind, you pick for the fourth time reads as absence, not chill.
🚩Narrating the date to social media in real time instead of actually being on it.
🚩Twenty minutes on the ex who did you dirty. Same rule as the women's list, pointed the other way.
🚩Visible phone anxiety, checking who liked what, while sitting across from a real human being.

Notice the overlap. Strip away the gendered specifics and both lists point at the same two crimes: treating people badly when there is nothing to gain, and being somewhere else while physically present. The phone is the modern flashpoint for the second one, and the research on it is genuinely bleak.

The turnoff both genders rank in their top three

8:12 PM. You are halfway through the best story you have.
(glances at phone under the table)
...anyway so then the whole flight got cancelled and8:13 PM
sorry, what? say that again8:13 PM
They did not have to answer that text. Nothing was on fire. Your brain just filed the entire night under not that into it, and the data says your brain is right.

The Baylor study that coined phubbing found 46 percent of people had been phone snubbed by a partner, and the ones who tolerated it reported more conflict, less satisfaction, and more depression. On a first date it is worse, because you have no history to cushion it. You are just a person watching someone choose a glowing rectangle over your face.

The Ick Is Real, But It Is Snitching On You

In 2025 a researcher named Eliana Saunders published the first real study on the ick, that sudden full body no you get when someone chews weird or runs for the bus with a backpack on. It is a genuine phenomenon. But the interesting part is not what triggers it. It is who catches it most.

THE ICK STUDY (2025)

  • Published in Personality and Individual Differences by Eliana Saunders at Azusa Pacific University, 125 single adults aged 24 to 72.
  • 64 percent had caught the ick, averaging around ten separate icks across their dating lives.
  • 26 percent ended things immediately over one, 42 percent ended it later, and 32 percent pushed through it.
  • Proneness to the ick tracked with the perceiver's own narcissism, disgust sensitivity, and perfectionism. Sometimes the flaw is in the beholder.

Women in the study were more triggered by misogyny, annoying speech, and public embarrassment. Men were more triggered by vanity and try hard trendiness. But the headline is the same for everyone: if you catch the ick over trivia constantly, the study says that pattern is describing you, not your dates.

The Plot Twist: What Actually Earns the Second Date

Here is the part that should change how you prep. Researchers at Harvard put 110 speed daters through more than 2,000 conversations and found the single strongest predictor of a second date yes was not looks, wit, or confidence. It was asking questions, specifically follow up questions that built on what the other person just said. Asking one more good question per date, on average, netted one extra second date across every twenty dates. And a 2024 study in the British Journal of Social Psychology found that being seen as kind literally raised how physically attractive people rated someone. Kindness is not a consolation trait. It changes the read.

✓ HEALTHY
✗ TOXIC

You rehearse being impressive, funny, and effortlessly cool.

They mostly remember whether you asked a real follow up question about their life.

You worry you are not attractive enough.

A 2024 study found kindness raises how physically attractive people rate you. Being nice makes you look better.

You keep it surface level so you seem low stakes.

Escalating, reciprocal self disclosure is what turns a pleasant chat into an actual connection.

You panic about the one weird thing you did.

The ick they might catch says more about their disgust sensitivity than your worth.

Your Pre-Date Fix List

None of this requires a personality transplant. It requires deleting six specific behaviors and adding one. Run this before your next date.

PHONE IN THE BAG

Not face down on the table. In your bag, on silent. The one text you save answering is worth less than the story you would have missed.

THE WAITER TEST APPLIES TO YOU

Be warm to every person who serves you. It is the cheapest, highest signal move on the entire date, and they are scoring it whether they realize it or not.

ONE MORE FOLLOW-UP

When they say something, ask about it instead of pivoting to your own story. Harvard says a single extra follow up per date measurably raises your odds.

HAVE AN ACTUAL OPINION

Pick the bar. Have a favorite. I do not mind, you choose is now a dealbreaker for a third of people. Preference is attractive.

SAVE THE EX AUTOPSY

No ex talk, no trauma download, not on date one. Save the deep cuts for when there is a container built to hold them.

KEEP THE PRE-DATE TEXTING LIGHT

Heavy messaging before you meet builds a fantasy the real person has to compete with, and 43 percent of men already report feeling drained by it.

One honest caveat so this does not become a weapon. If someone is genuinely unkind, dishonest, or makes you feel unsafe, that is real information and you should act on it. But a harmless quirk that gives you the ick is a different thing. Before you write someone off for the way they hold a fork, ask whether the flaw is in them or in your own tolerance for being a normal, slightly awkward human.

Nobody remembers whether you were the most impressive person in the room. They remember whether they felt interesting when they were with you. That is the entire game, and almost nobody plays it.

The hard part is that you cannot see your own tells while they are happening. Delulu Check reads a chat and surfaces the patterns you are blind to in the moment: who carries the conversation, whether the questions go both ways, where the interest is actually pooling.
